Highbrook Aero Modellers was formerly known as Roskill Modellers “The Roskill Model Builders Club Inc.” and was founded in September 1954.
In the “Good old days” we had a clubhouse where regular meetings and workshop nights were held. Members were helped to scratch build models and others just came for a chat. It was probably fair to say that model building skills far outweighed the flying skills of many members in the early days
Roskill Modellers have had a number of flying sites over the years, but over time were forced to move because of the growth of population and housing in the suburban areas. A flying field with IC powered models does not make a great neighbour from a noise perspective.
Technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Modern radios (transmitters) are now very reliable and include lots of safety features such as frequency hopping, model match, failsafe and great range. Gyros that help to stabilise models have also made flying easier. Along with traditional builders’ kits there is also a great range of ready to fly (RTF) model aircraft options to suit every pocket and skill level.
In 2008 our site at Pikes Point was turned into a storage area for newly imported cars. We searched and found the Highbrook Reserve and with the assistance of the Auckland Recreational Airparks Trust the site was made available for model flying. To recognise the move to the Highbrook reserve the club officially changed its name to Highbrook Aero Modellers. The park is just outside the Auckland International Airport control zone, but a “Danger Area” notice to full size pilots was in existence because of the nearby power station. Once again, the Auckland Recreational Airparks Trust assisted and a variation to the danger zone allowed R/C flying up to 900ft. More recently the club’s tenure at the current location has been extended with the Auckland Council for a further ten-year period, which is fantastic for the location.
Our airstrip is 174m long and 30 m wide and we have a wonderful facility for spectators, training and experienced pilots and all to enjoy safely.
The Highbrook Model Airpark is available 7 days a week for members of Highbrook Aero Modellers, subject to compliance with all Club rules and conditions.
